Shipping Container Costs to Philippines

The Philippines is where East meets West. With over 100 million people living across some 7,600 tropical islands in the western Pacific Ocean, you’ll never find a more unique blend of Asian and European cultures. Most notably, it’s the only Christian nation in the whole of Asia, and there are churches all over the country. The capital city of Manila is a huge, heaving metropolis, home to modern skyscrapers, old colonial buildings and the spacious Rizal Park. Away from the urban areas, Filipinos can enjoy some of most stunning natural beauty on Earth, from pristine beaches and crystalline lakes to huge green mountains. The Philippines certainly has a lot to offer.

Different shipping options

Shipping your belongings to the Philippines is easy; you just need to decide how you are going to do it. The two main options are air freight and sea freight.

Air freight is the choice for people who are moving in a rush. A cargo plane will get your things to the Philippines from anywhere in the world in just two to three days. However, it’s also very expensive, so you’re paying a proper premium for the speedy service. Unless you’re having to move abroad last minute, air freight is best avoided.

On the other hand, sea freight is significantly less expensive, typically costing around five times less than air freight. This makes it very handy for people who are relocating on a budget. A container ship travels much slower than a cargo plane and will usually take several weeks, so be sure to plan your move well in advance. In terms of value for money, sea freight is a much better option.

If you do choose sea freight, your items will be shipped in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. You don’t have to fill the whole container with stuff; if you’re bringing no more than about 15 cubic metres of cargo, you will share the use of a container with other people. This is a process called Less Than Container Load, or LCL. The majority of our shipping suppliers will ship your things door-to-door, which means they’ll take care of the whole process from your old front door to your new one.

Major shipping routes

The largest container terminal in the Philippines is the Port of Manila, which is especially handy if you’re moving to the capital city (as many expats do). For people heading to the centre of the country, the Port of Cebu is the best option, while the Port of General Santos is the biggest terminal in the south. Once your container reaches Filipino soil, it will pass through customs and then go by truck or train to your new home.

Philippines customs

The customs process can seem quite complicated but our shipping suppliers will assist you all the way. You are required to create an inventory (i.e. a detailed list) of everything you intend to bring into the Philippines, being as clear and accurate as possible. Customs officials will physically inspect your container, so it’s very important that your inventory is truthful. See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Philippines customs.

You are allowed to import your personal effects and household goods duty-free into the Philippines if you are a) a returning Filipino national, b) married to a Filipino national or c) the holder of a specific visa type (9G, 13G, 13A, 9D, 47A2, SRRV or EO 226). Check out the official Philippines’ Bureau of Customs website for more information about the whole process.
