Shipping Container Costs to Australia

Sydney is the cultural and financial capital of Australia. Situated on the southeast coast of the country, “The Harbour City” is home to a deeply diverse population of over 5.1 million people. It’s a truly beautiful place to live, sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean to the east and the misty Blue Mountains to the west. Locals have got a serious amount of water on their doorstep, ranging from the Parramatta and Georges Rivers to Botany Bay. Unsurprisingly, watersports are basically a way of life over there, and Sydney’s weather is warm all year round, so going outside is always an option. What’s more, the city is blessed with a long coastline of gorgeous golden beaches. Life in Sydney is hard to beat.

Different shipping options

When it comes to shipping your belongings to Sydney, you’ve got two options: air freight or sea freight.

Air freight will move everything quickly. Cargo planes offer a speedy service, capable of reaching Sydney from anywhere in the world in just two or three days. However, air freight is also very expensive, so it’s not ideal if you’re sticking to a budget.

Sea freight, on the other hand, is much cheaper, normally costing about five times less than air freight. It’s also significantly slower than air freight (usually by several weeks), so be sure to give yourself enough time. At MoveHub, we certainly recommend choosing sea freight  as it’s better value for money.

If you go for sea freight, your belongings will travel either in a 20ft container or a 40ft container. Those unable to fill a whole container (i.e. volumes of 15 cubic metres or lower) will share the use of a container with other people. This is known as Less Than Container Load, or LCL. Most of our shipping suppliers will provide you with a full door-to-door service, which means they’ll bring your belongings all the way from your old home to your new one in Sydney.

Major shipping routes

The Port of Sydney, known locally as Port Botany, is one of the most important container terminals in Australia and the South Pacific. It is located just 15 km from the city centre, making Sydney very accessible. Once your container has passed through customs, it will be taken by train and/or truck to your new Australian home.

Australia customs

The customs process in Australia is a little strict by global standards, but your shipping company will help you through them. Australia is very serious about protecting its ecosystem, which means that any wooden furniture and/or garden equipment will have to be inspected by quarantine officials once it arrives. To speed up the process, make sure everything you’re bringing has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. You are also required to create an inventory of all the belongings you’re taking into the country, declaring the value of each item.

It’s possible to import all your household goods duty-free into Australia, as long as they a) are used, b) have been used for at least 12 months and c) intended to be used again in Australia. To submit an application for a duty-free shipment, you must complete the Unaccompanied Personal Effects Statement (B534 Form). For more information, check out the Australian Customs official website.
