Shipping Container Costs to Singapore

Singapore is a small country with a big heart, bursting with diversity and character. Nowhere else in the world will you find such a rich fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures. The tropical city-state, located at the southern tip of Malaysia, lies on an island about half the size of Los Angeles. It’s cosy, to say the least. Over the years, Singapore has bloomed into a futuristic garden city, dedicating more than half of its space to the green stuff. Skyscrapers mix seamlessly with trees and there are almost too many parks to choose from. The city’s crowning achievement is the Gardens by the Bay, which contains the Flower Dome, the Cloud Forest and the enchanting Supertrees. It sounds more like a fairytale than a real place. If you’re thinking of moving to Singapore, there’s some practical information you need to know about first.

Different shipping options

You’ve probably got a few belongings that you’d like to take with you. International moves generally come with two options: shipping by sea and shipping by air. Sending cargo on a plane is fast but expensive, while using a container ship is slower but also much cheaper. We strongly recommend that you go with ocean freight if you want to save money, but it requires a bit of advanced planning. If you do opt for the ocean, you’ll also need to decide whether you need a 20ft container or a 40ft container. Likewise, you might want to use only a portion of a container (known as LCL or Less than Container Load) if you don’t have that much cargo to bring. But don’t worry, your shipping supplier can help you with all of these decisions. Most shipping suppliers will offer a full door-to-door service, but you should confirm this before agreeing on a price.

Major shipping routes

Singapore has only one port, so all of your belongings will be heading there. Don’t be deceived by the size of the country; the Port of Singapore is the second busiest container port in the world, second only to Shanghai. Not many things travel through Asia without stopping in Singapore. The port is nearly two hundred years old, so they certainly know what they’re doing. Your cargo will be in super safe hands.

Singaporean customs

Once your container has arrived in the Port of Singapore, the final hurdle is getting it past customs. You’ll need to provide a clear and detailed inventory that declares everything you’re bringing into the country. Remember: honesty is the best policy. There are certain items that are either prohibited or restricted by Singaporean customs (see below), so you should familiarise yourself with these before you get packing. Interestingly, chewing gum is a no-no. All of your personal belongings are subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST), but you can apply for GST relief if you are able to prove that you’re moving to Singapore permanently. Port officials might physically inspect your container and this will incur a fee, but unfortunately there’s nothing you can do to prevent this.
