Shipping Container Costs to Spain

Barcelona is Europe’s coolest city, situated in the heart of Catalonia in northeastern Spain. Nowhere else in the world will you find a place so stylish, artistic and beautiful. Barcelona is famous for its stunning architecture, ranging from Gothic to Art Nouveau, and its winding medieval streets. The locals never tire of seeing la Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s breathtaking cathedral. What’s more, there’s also no shortage of natural beauty, with Mount Tibidabo to the northwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the southeast. If you ever need a break from city life, Barcelona’s beaches and promenades are the perfect place to take it. You can’t beat a glass of sangria on a warm Spanish evening. Before you can start your new life in Barcelona, there are a few practical things you need to know first.

Different shipping options

Some items of furniture are just impossible to leave behind. If you’re planning on relocating permanently to Barcelona then you will probably want to bring a few belongings with you. There are two key options available when it comes to moving overseas; air freight or sea freight.

Transporting your cargo by air freight is quick but it’s also expensive. A plane will get your belongings to Barcelona from anywhere in the world within three days, so it’s very handy for last-minute moves. However, it’s not great if you’re moving on a budget.

On the other hand, sea freight is much cheaper. A container ship is significantly slower than a plane, but it will charge you a fraction of the price. At MoveHub, we recommend that you give yourself enough time for your move and opt for the ocean. If you do choose sea freight, you’ll be using either a 20ft container or a 40ft container, depending on the amount of cargo you’re bringing. If you’re not taking much with you (i.e. less than 20 cubic metres of cargo), you can share the use of a container with other people. This is known as Less Than Container Load (LCL). Your shipping company will help you with these decisions. Most of our suppliers will offer you a full door-to-door delivery service, which comes at an extra cost but it’s far more convenient than port-to-port.

Major shipping routes

The most likely destination for your container will be the Port of Barcelona, which is Spain’s third largest container port. It covers a whopping 2,400 acres and it’s located just 10km away from Barcelona’s city centre. Once your container has reached the port, it will pass through customs before heading via truck or train to your new Spanish home. Easy!

Clearing Spanish customs

Customs is not as scary and complicated as it sounds, and your shipping company will help you through the process. To get your container through the Port of Barcelona, you need to prepare an inventory of all the belongings you’re taking into the country. It’s important to be as clear and specific as possible; if the customs officials aren’t satisfied then they can open your container for physical inspection, which can cause delays and incur extra fees. If you’re coming from another EU country then you are able to import your goods duty-free, but if you’re coming from outside the EU then there are a few more requirements. Your household goods can enter Spain duty-free, but they must be a) used, b) at least six months old and c) intended for at least one year of use in Spain. See below for the items that are restricted or prohibited by Spanish customs. Check out their official website for more information.
