Shipping Container Costs to Nigeria
Planning on a move to West Africa? You canโt get much more exciting than Nigeria. With over 198 million people living there, itโs the most populous country on the continent, bursting with vibrant culture and stunning wildlife (especially elephants). Abuja is the capital city, but itโs in Lagos โ home to more than 21 million people โ where things are really happening.Known as โThe Giant of Africaโ, Nigeria will wow you with all it has to offer.
Air freight or sea freight?
If youโre thinking of relocating permanently to Nigeria, youโll probably want to bring a few belongings with you. There are two main options to choose between: air freight or sea freight.Air freight offers a fast service. Cargo planes are able to reach Nigeria from anywhere in the world in just two or three days. However, air freight is expensive โ ย itโs handy if you need to move abroad quickly, but not great for keeping costs low.
Sea freight is the slower option, but itโs also much more affordable, being around five times cheaper than air freight. If youโre moving on a budget, sea freight is ideal โ just be sure to allow several weeks for your cargo to arrive.
If you choose sea freight, your belongings will go in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container, depending on the amount of stuff youโre bringing. If the total volume of your cargo is less than around 15 cubic metres, you will share a container with other people (in a process known as Less Than Container Load, or LCL). Most of our shipping suppliers provide a full door-to-door service, which means theyโll take your belongings all the way from your old home to your new one in Nigeria. Easy!
Major shipping ports
Nigeria has just the one coastline (to its south), so thereโs only one way your container will be approaching the country. The Port of Lagos is a huge shipping terminal in the southwest, while the Port of Onne is the big player in the southeast. Your container will most likely be taken to one of these ports, before travelling by train and/or truck to your new home.Clearing customs in Nigeria
A countryโs customs process can seem quite complicated, but our shipping suppliers will assist you all the way. You are required to create an inventory (i.e. a detailed list) of everything you intend to bring into Nigeria, being as clear and accurate as possible. All shipments are physically inspected in Nigeria, so itโs very important that your inventory is truthful. See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Nigerian customs. You are usually allowed to import your personal effects and household goods duty-free into Nigeria, so long as youโve owned and used them for at least six months and you intend to use them again in Nigeria (i.e. not sell them). Check out Nigeriaโs official customs website for more information.
