Shipping Container Costs to Japan
Japan is the home of tranquility, but with a twist. โThe Land of the Rising Sunโ is where ancient tradition meets cutting-edge technology. Head to any major city and youโll see temples, skyscrapers, cherry blossoms and neon lights. The Pacific nation is composed of nearly 7000 islands, over 100 volcanoes and Tokyo, the most populous city in the world. Move to Japan and youโll be immersing yourself in a truly iconic culture, ranging from the arts of kabuki and origami to the beautiful zen gardens and beyond. Itโs also home to some famously good food, including sushi, sashimi and tempura. The mega healthy diet of fish and rice is a major factor behind Japanโs excellent life expectancy, which is the highest in the world. If youโre thinking of moving there, here is some practical information youโll need to know first.Different shipping options
You have two choices when it comes to shipping your belongings abroad: sea or air. Sending stuff via plane is quick but quite expensive, while using a container ship is slower but also comparatively cheaper. At MoveHub, we recommend opting for sea freight as itโs much better value for money - it just requires a bit of advanced planning. If you choose sea freight, you also need to decide between a 20ft container and a 40ft container. However, if you arenโt bringing much cargo then donโt worry; you donโt have to make full use of the container. You can opt for Less Than Container Load (LCL), which you can discuss with your shipping company. Most of our suppliers offer a full door-to-door service, but you should check this with them before agreeing to any terms.Major shipping routes
Japan has nearly three hundred commercial ports, but not all of them are equipped to deal with container ships. The nationโs largest port is in Tokyo, situated in the centre of the country on the east coast, while the next four largest ports are Kobe, Yokohama, Osaka and Nagoya (all located along the south coast). If youโre shipping any belongings to Japan, they will most likely be heading to one of these ports. After that, theyโll be taken by truck and/or train to your new home!Japanese customs
The Japanese are very careful about what goes in and out of their country, but follow the rules and you wonโt have a problem. Every container that goes into Japan is inspected, although X-ray machines have sped up the process enormously (to about ten minutes per container). Youโll have to pay customs duties and inspection fees, but if they find anything they donโt like then youโll be paying a lot more. Weโve listed below some of the key things that arenโt allowed into Japan, such as electronic equipment and straw packing materials. Make sure you label every box clearly and provide an accurate list of all the belongings youโre bringing into the country.
