Shipping Container Costs to India

There’s nowhere in the world that can match the rich diversity of India. The South Asian country is a vast and extremely varied place, containing one sixth of the global population. There are 29 states and each is different from the last, boasting a dazzling range of food, traditions and landscapes. With the Thar Desert to the west, the Himalayan mountains to the north and the beautiful beaches of Goa to the south, there’s more than enough scenery to go around. If you like wildlife, India’s is first class; think wild peacocks, tigers and plum-headed parakeets. Meanwhile, there’s the chaotic buzz of urban life, ranging from the blue roofs of Jodhpur to the striking capital of New Delhi. Indian cities are vibrant, unforgettable places. To top it all off, their traditional food is some of the best in the world, bursting with spice and flavour. Before you can start your new life in India, there’s some practical information you need to know about how to move there.

Different shipping options

When it comes to moving your belongings internationally, you have a choice to make. There are two ways of shipping cargo overseas, and they each come with their pros and cons.

  • Air freight is handy if you’re moving last minute, although we don’t recommend it otherwise. Shipping by plane is fast but expensive.

  • Sea freight is the other way around: it’s slower but much more affordable. If you’ve got time to spare and you’re sticking to a budget, shipping everything by sea is the best option. Depending on the volume of cargo you’re bringing, you’ll need to make a choice between a 20ft container and a 40ft container. Likewise, if you’re not taking much, you can share a container with other people (called Less Than Container Load, or LCL). Your shipping company can help you with these decisions. Most of our suppliers offer a helpful door-to-door service, although you should check that this is part of their quote before agreeing to anything.

Major shipping routes

India has a 7,500km coastline and 13 major ports, so shipping containers over there couldn’t be easier. The largest container shipping port is Nhava Sheva, which is located just south of Mumbai, halfway down the west coast. It’s a huge port, handling over 50% of all container traffic entering India. Other large shipping ports include Mumbai, Tuticorin (south coast) and Chennai (lower east coast).

India customs

It’s important you get clued up on India’s customs and regulations before you start loading a container. You don’t want to bring anything that’s prohibited or restricted and then get caught out at the arrival port. See below to get an idea of the things that aren’t allowed. In order to get your cargo through customs, you need to create an inventory and declare everything you’re bringing into the country. The majority of containers entering India are subject to physical inspection, so your inventory needs to match up with what’s inside. There are customs duties to pay, but fortunately India has a duty-free policy for people who are moving there permanently. As long as you have lived outside India for a minimum of two years, all used household goods won’t cost you anything to import. Check out the Indian customs official website for more information.
