Shipping Container Costs to Jordan
Jordan is one of the gems of the Middle East, situated at the base of the Arab Peninsula. It’s home to around 10 million people, over 10% of whom live in the capital city of Amman. There isn’t much in the way of coastline here (just 26 km along the Red Sea), but you’ll find stunning natural beauty and fascinating historical sites, including the desert valley of Wadi Rum and the ancient city of Petra. Here’s what you need to know about shipping your belongings to Jordan.
Sea freight or air freight?
You’ve got two options to choose between - air freight and sea freight.Air freight is great if you’re moving in a rush; a cargo plane will take your things to Jordan from anywhere in the world in just two or three days. However, air freight is also very expensive, so you’re paying a proper premium for the speedy service. Unless you’re having to move abroad last minute, air freight is best avoided.
On the other hand, sea freight is much more affordable, typically costing around five times less than air freight. This makes it very handy for people who are relocating on a budget. A container ship travels much slower than a cargo plane and will usually take several weeks to reach its destination, so be sure to plan your move well in advance.
If you do choose sea freight, your items will be shipped in either a 20ft or a 40ft container. You don’t have to fill the whole container with stuff; if you’re bringing no more than about 15 cubic metres of cargo, you will share the use of a container with other people. This is a process called Less Than Container Load, or LCL.
The majority of our suppliers will ship your things door-to-door, meaning they’ll take care of the whole process all the way from your old home to your new one.
Major shipping ports
There’s only one container terminal in Jordan – the Port of Aqaba, situated on the country’s Red Sea coastline. Once your container reaches Aqaba, it will pass through customs before travelling by truck and/or train to your new home.Clearing customs in Jordan
The customs process is much easier than it seems, and our experienced shipping suppliers will guide you through all of it. You need to create an inventory (i.e. a packing list) of everything you’re bringing into Jordan, being as specific and detailed as possible. It’s helpful to know this before you start loading a container. All personal effects and household goods are subject to customs duty and tax in Jordan, which is typically around 52% of the shipment’s value. Be aware that all shipments are physically inspected, so make sure you don’t bring anything that’s restricted or prohibited (see below for more information). Take a look at Jordan’s official customs website to find out more.
