Shipping Container Costs to Italy

Shipping costs to Italy are usually pretty reasonable, considering that on average, people will be taking £40,000 worth of belongings with them. This figure is based on the typical value of the contents of a three-bedroom house, as estimated by Admiral Insurance. Of course, the cost of shipping will fluctuate, depending on where you’re travelling to and from, what you’re shipping, and how much you’re moving. If you’re trying to keep the price down, sea freight is the way to go – it’ll typically cost you around five times more to fly your goods over.

Should you choose sea freight or air freight?

If you’re moving to Italy, you might have a lot of stuff you’d like to bring with you. There are two main options for getting these items to your new home: air freight or sea freight. Air freight offers a quick service – cargo planes can reach Italy from almost anywhere in the world in just 2-3 days. However, air freight is also very expensive, so it isn’t ideal for people who are moving on a budget. Sea freight is much more affordable, typically costing around five times less than air freight. Container ships are slow and can take several weeks to reach their destination, but if you plan your move well in advance, this won’t be a problem.

Clearing customs at the Italian border

You will be required to make a clear and precise list (known as an ‘inventory’) of everything you’re bringing into Italy, including the value of each item. If the list isn’t up to the Italian customs officials’ standards, they will inspect your container and charge you extra fees. This can sound daunting, but fear not – this list is another thing our suppliers can help you with in the run-up to your move. People coming from within the EU do not have to pay duties or taxes on their household goods, but the rules are different for non-EU arrivals. If you are coming from outside the EU, you are entitled to a duty-free shipment of household goods, but you need to meet certain conditions. The goods must be used, at least one year old, and imported no more than six months after your arrival. Italian import duty rates tend to range from 0-17%, while VAT on shipments is 21%. Check out the Italian customs official website for more information.
