Shipping Container Costs to Brazil

Brazil is where everyone’s South American dreams come true: vibrant cities, beautiful landscapes and some sensational food. It’s a huge country (the fifth largest in the world) famous for its irresistible carnival atmosphere, drawing in expats from all over the world. With over 211 million people living there, the major cities of Brasilia, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro can get pretty busy, but that’s all part of Brazil’s loveable hustle and bustle. Here’s everything you need to know about shipping your stuff over there.

Different shipping options

If you’re thinking of moving to Brazil then you’ve probably got some furniture that needs to be shipped. Your choice is between air freight and sea freight.

Air freight gets the job done quickly. Cargo planes offer a speedy service that will take just two or three days from almost anywhere around the world. Unfortunately, air freight is also the much more expensive option, so it’s helpful for last-minute moves but not ideal if you’re trying to keep costs down.

Sea freight is significantly slower and it will take several weeks, but it’s generally about five times cheaper than air freight. As long as you plan your move well in advance, you can choose sea freight without worrying about the time it takes. Container ships also have a much better carbon footprint than cargo planes, so you’ll be doing the world a favour, too.

If you do go for sea freight, your belongings will travel in either a 20ft container or a 40ft container. You don’t need to worry about filling the whole container; if the total volume of your cargo is less than about 15 cubic metres, you can share the use of a container with other people. This is called Less Than Container Load, or LCL. The majority of our shipping suppliers provide a door-to-door service, which means they’ll collect your belongings from your old home and bring them all the way to your new one.

Major shipping routes

Brazil has a huge coastline facing the Atlantic Ocean, so there is no shortage of ports. The country’s largest container terminal (and the busiest in South America) is the Port of Santos, situated right by the southern city of São Paulo and not far from Rio de Janeiro. It’s likely your goods will be shipped to the Port of Santos before going by truck and/or train to your new Brazilian home.

Clearing customs in Brazil

Customs can seem a bit daunting but our experienced shipping suppliers will help you through it. Fortunately, Brazil’s customs process is fairly straightforward. You need to create an inventory (i.e. a detailed list) of all the items you’re bringing into the country. Customs officials may open your container and physically inspect it, so it’s important that everything inside matches up with what’s written in your inventory. Make sure you don’t bring anything that’s prohibited or restricted by Brazilian customs (see below).

You can bring your household goods and personal belongings (new and used) into Brazil duty-free, as long as the items aren’t intended for any future commercial use. Also, your shipment must arrive no later than 180 days after your own arrival.
