Shipping Container Costs to United States of America
Yee haw! Life in Austin, Texas is one hell of a ride, and you can easily hop onboard. Known as “The City of the Violet Crown” for its beautiful sunset skylines, Austin is an exciting hotspot of live music, cultural diversity, business opportunities, and baking heat. There are nearly 1 million Austinites living there, blessed with a wonderful range of parks, lakes, and music festivals. Soon, SXSW and Austin City Limits could be right on your doorstep. Here’s what you need to know about shipping to Austin.Sea freight or air freight?
There are two ways you can ship your belongings to Austin: air freight or sea freight. For people moving in a rush, air freight is best. Most cargo planes can travel to Austin from anywhere in the world in only two or three days. However, air freight is also very expensive, so it’s best avoided if you’re moving on a budget.
On the other hand, sea freight is significantly cheaper, normally costing about five times less than air freight. While the service is more affordable, it’s also much slower, so it’s important that you plan your move well in advance.
If you do opt for sea freight, one of our suppliers will ship your belongings in either a 20ft or a 40ft container. For smaller volumes of cargo (15 cubic metres or less) there is a process called Less Than Container Load (LCL), in which several people share the use of one container.
Most of our suppliers offer a door-to-door service, meaning they’ll look after every part of the process – all the way from your old home to your new one.
Major shipping ports
The container terminal closest to Austin is the Port of Houston on the Gulf Coast, which is one of the biggest ports in the US. Your container will most likely be shipped to Houston before continuing on to Austin via truck or train. However, if you’re moving from Asia or Oceania, your container will first have to be shipped to a west coast port, such as the Port of Los Angeles.Clearing customs in the US
The US customs process can seem fairly complicated, but our shipping suppliers will assist you all the way. You are required to create an inventory (i.e. a detailed list) of everything you are bringing into the US, being as clear and accurate as possible. Customs officials may physically open and inspect your container, so it’s very important that everything matches up with what’s listed in your inventory. You are allowed to import your personal effects and household goods duty-free into the US, providing you have used them for at least a year prior to your move and you intend to use them again in your new American home. See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by US customs. You should also check out their official website for more information.
