Shipping Container Costs to Thailand

Thailand is the heart of Southeast Asia. Home to some of the world’s most exciting food, gorgeous weather and beautiful beaches, this tropical nation has got a lot to offer. Thailand’s pretty busy; with just over 69 million people, it’s in the top 20 most populous countries on Earth. The bustling capital city of Bangkok is famous for its nightlife, and there’s a wonderful mixture of skyscrapers and temples. Meanwhile, the smaller cities offer something a bit calmer, such as Chiang Mai in the north and Surat Thani in the south. There’s also a lot of natural beauty up and down the country, from the hilly forests on the mainland to the exquisite beaches running along the southern peninsula. On top of all this, Thailand is a culinary paradise, and you’ll be able to find sensational curries wherever you are in the country. Read on to find out more about shipping to Thailand.

Different shipping options

There are two main ways to ship your belongings to Thailand; by air or by sea. Your choice will largely depend on your budget and the amount of time you have.

For fast delivery from anywhere in the world, choose air freight. Sending your stuff on a cargo plane is a surefire way to get your move done quickly, but it’s very expensive. If you’re trying to stick to a budget, air freight won’t do you any favours.

On the other hand, sea freight is much more affordable. Container ships generally take several weeks longer than planes, but their services cost a lot less. We really recommend sea freight for its reliability and value for money. Just make sure you start planning your move a few months in advance.

If you do choose sea freight, you’ll use either a 20ft container or a 40ft container depending on the amount you want to ship. Small volumes of cargo (anything less than around 15 cubic metres) will share a container with other people’s cargo, which is a process known as Less Than Container Load (LCL). The majority of our suppliers provide a full door-to-door service to their customers, so they’ll take your belongings from your old front door all the way to your new one.

Major shipping routes

There are lots of established and experienced shipping ports all along the Gulf of Thailand. The country’s largest container terminal is the Port of Bangkok, which is very handy if you’re moving to Thailand’s capital city. Meanwhile, the country’s busiest container terminal is the Port of Laem Chabang, located about 130 km south of Bangkok. Both of these ports are well connected by road and rail to the rest of the country. For moves to the very south of Thailand, the Port of Songkhla is ideal. Once your container lands on Thai soil, it will pass through customs and then go by truck or train to your new home.

Thailand customs

The customs regulations in Thailand are famously strict, but the process is fairly easy if you follow the rules and use the help of your shipping company. You are expected to create an inventory of all the goods you’re bringing into the country, including accurate descriptions and the monetary value of each item. If the inventory is dissatisfactory then your container may be subject to physical inspection, which can lead to longer waiting times and additional fees. See below for an idea of the items that are prohibited or restricted by Thai customs.

If you are a returning Thai national then you can import your household goods duty-free, otherwise your shipment will face normal duties and taxes. However, if you’ve got a non-immigrant visa that lasts at least one year and your household goods are used (and over six months old), then you can import your belongings duty-free. Thai customs limits everyone to just one duty-free shipment, so try not to use more than one container. For more information, check out the Thai customs official website.
