Shipping Container Costs to Spain

Madrid is the capital city of Spain, located right in the centre of the country. With a population of around 3.3 million people, the city is home to beautiful streets, spacious plazas, and some of the best art galleries in the world. Madrileños are also blessed with the Retiro, an elegant green park in the heart of the city. Expats love the Madrid lifestyle, and we can see why. Here’s what you need to know about shipping your stuff there.

Different shipping options

It’s easy to move your belongings to Madrid. After you’ve decided what you’re bringing, you need to choose between two options: air freight or sea freight.

For people moving in a rush, air freight is best. Most cargo planes can travel to Madrid from anywhere in the world in only two or three days. However, air freight is also very expensive, so it’s best avoided if you’re moving on a budget.

On the other hand, sea freight is significantly cheaper, normally costing about five times less than air freight. While the service is much slower, it is also much more affordable, so it’s important that you plan your move well in advance.

If you do opt for sea freight, one of our suppliers will ship your belongings in either a 20ft or a 40ft container. For smaller volumes of cargo there is a process called Less Than Container Load (LCL), in which several people share the use of one container. Most of our suppliers offer a door-to-door service, meaning they’ll look after every part of the process from your old home all the way to your new one.

Major shipping routes

There are three major shipping ports in Spain: Barcelona (in the northeast), Valencia (on the east coast) and Algeciras (on the south coast). You may not have heard of it, but Algeciras is actually Spain’s busiest and most important port. It acts as a corridor between Europe, Africa and America, so it’s very special.

Since Madrid is right in the centre of the country, there’s also a bit of land transport required. After your shipment has passed through customs, it will go by truck and/or train to your new Spanish residence.

Clearing customs in Spain

The customs process sounds complicated, but it’s fairly straightforward, and your shipping company will help you through it. You are required to create a clear and specific inventory (i.e. a list) of everything you’re bringing into Spain, declaring the value of each item. If the Spanish customs officials are dissatisfied with your inventory, they will physically inspect your container and charge you extra fees for the process.

People coming from within the EU do not have to pay duties or taxes on their household goods, but the rules are different for non-EU arrivals. If you are coming from outside the EU, you are entitled to a duty-free shipment of household goods, but you need to meet certain conditions. The goods must be a) used, b) at least six months old, c) intended for at least one year of use in Spain, and d) imported no more than three months after your arrival.

See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Spanish customs. You can also check out their official website for more information.
