Vancouver’s got something going on every night of the week, and it’s a gem of a city for live music and jazz fanatics in particular. The social scene by night is much more about music, bars and lounges than serious clubbing – though clubs are still to be found for those who want to get down all night to some big beats.

A real Vancouver institution on buzzing Granville Street, The Yale is widely touted as one of the best blues and jazz bars in the world. Anything goes here - it’s super friendly, and you’ll make some great mates if you spend a few hours at the bar soaking up the jazzy rhythms.

Great for craft beer fans and those who like to sit in unpretentious surroundings and enjoy a good bite to eat with their jar of ale. This cosy little microbrewery is slightly off the beaten track but well worth the detour.

A fun, New York style club with table service in the heart of one of Vancouver’s best spot for dining out. Bar None attracts a well-heeled crowd who groove away to house music and hip hop. Exposed brickwork gives the joint a distinctly ‘warehouse’ feel.

A big, clean club with three dance floors and a popular cocktail lounge. Also a live music venue and a salsa club with lessons for newbies on Wednesdays. Check out their rock, funk and soul night on Saturdays – it’s a winner.

The Commodore Ballroom (£)

A renowned live music venue and nightclub, The Commodore brags a packed out calendar of big nights with a distinctly rock and roll leaning. It’s hosted The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin amongst other rock royalty in its time, and runs a succession of club nights after its live music events all week. Great views of the stage, superb sound quality and a friendly team of bar staff make this a venue people come to again and again. Check whether you can reserve tables for some events.

Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club (£)

Sister club to Yuk Yuk’s Toronto and part of a nationwide chain, this is a good value night out in unpretentious surroundings. Proudly promoting Canadian stand-up comedians from grassroots upwards, Yuk Yuk is where funny peeps like Jim Carrey started out life. Enter the prize draw for an almost guaranteed pair of free tickets to come again.

Vancouver International Jazz Festival (£)

We told you Vancouver loves its jazz! Over forty venues around the city play host to jazz bands and performers from around the world for a month every June.
