Beautiful old map of Sweden
This beautiful map made around 1539 shows medieval Sweden in all of its glory. It is purportedly the first detailed map of Scandinavia, created by Olaus Magnus (Olof Månsson in Swedish).
The original Carta marina measured 170cm by 125cm and was made from blocks of wood!

The incredibly detailed map shows a number of Dragons (Drakar?) Sea serpents and strange beasts of the sea. "Carta marina" literally means "Sea map" and depicts the currents accurately, even today. You can make your own mind up about the sea-monsters..
Monsters drawn to scale
And a barely-legible description in Latin. A special prize to whoever can read (and translate) it!
