Nightlife in Madrid

£=cheap ££=average £££=expensive

If you're considering traveling or moving to Madrid, an important consideration for you must be the nightlife. Madrid comes into its own after daylight hours and hitting the town before midnight is unheard of in this city that never – ever – sleeps. As they say, ‘in Madrid it’s never late’… Placa de la Indepencia is for the well-heeled gentry and every newcomer to Madrid needs to sample a night on a terraza – eating, drinking and schmoozing the night away. Rooftop bars are the hip way to start the night, and hotels like ME Madrid lead the way in vertiginous swimming pools under the stars.

Madrid is a serious clubbing destination and a city devoted to cocktail worship. With a culture of cocktail sipping and mixing that goes back several decades, there are hundreds of watering holes where you can pay your respects to the majestic Martini. So, are you ready? Vamos!

Bars in Madrid

Clubs in Madrid

Kapital (£££)

Calle de Atocha, 125, +34 914 20 29 06

Widely touted as one of the best clubbing experiences outside Ibiza, Kapital is a superclub with the price tag to match. Even if you just do it once – just make sure you do it. Seven themed floors thrum with locals and tourists taking in the sensory feast on show. From burlesque trapeze artists to podium gymnasts and Euro DJs, this place keeps going till the sun comes up. Get there before 1.

Joy Madrid (££)

Calle del Arenal, 11, 91 366 37 33

Another one for hard core clubbers - a bit of a theme here in Madrid - Joy Madrid has an epic sunken dance floor and some seriously impressive lightshows, lasers and special effects to enjoy as you lose yourself in an electro-inspired reverie. And when it all gets too much, you can retire to the balcony for a little breather.

Events and shows in Madrid

For something a little more refined and a tad more sedate, Madrid has plenty going on the evenings that doesn’t involve dancing for hours and getting all hot and sweaty. The city hosts indoor and outdoor concerts all-year round, as well as stunning opera, ballet and Flamenco performances.

Teatro Royal (£££)

Plaza Isabel II, +34 91 516 06 00

A stunning baroque opera house steeped in a fascinating history, where you can spend a slightly more civilized evening in the capital. Performances range from opera to ballet and modern dance, and the theatre gives cheap guided tours by day.

Cardamomo (£)

Calle de Echegaray 15, +34 91 369 07 57

A proper in-the-know Flamenco bar where live dances take place on weeknights from around ten o clock.
