Shipping Container Costs to Belgium

Thinking of moving to Belgium? Located in northwestern Europe, the ‘Flat Country’ is a charming place for expats. Home to sensational craft beer, delicious chocolate and beautiful architecture, Belgium offers a unique blend of French, Dutch and German cultures. The capital city of Brussels is a popular destination, but there are great options all over the country. Here’s everything you need to know about shipping to Belgium.

Different shipping options

If you need to ship your belongings over to Belgium, there are two main options to choose between: air freight and sea freight. For fast delivery, air freight is best. Cargo planes will typically take between 2-3 days to reach Belgium from anywhere in the world, so it’s very helpful if you’re moving in a hurry. Air freight is also very expensive, but fortunately, there is a cheaper alternative available. Sea freight generally costs around five times less than air freight, so it’s a much more affordable option for international movers. Container ships are slower than cargo planes, but plan your move well in advance and this won’t be a problem. If you do go for sea freight, your belongings will be shipped in either a 20ft or a 40ft container. There’s no obligation to fill a whole container; if the total volume of your cargo is no more than about 15 cubic metres, you will share the use of a container with other people. This is a process called Less Than Container Load (LCL). The majority of our shipping suppliers also offer professional packing and unpacking services, insurance cover, and full door-to-door delivery. These optional extras all come with additional fees, but they are well worth it.

Major shipping routes

Belgium has only one coastline (on the North Sea), which means the country’s biggest ports are all fairly close together. The Port of Antwerp is Belgium’s largest container terminal, located 80 km inland and very well connected to the rest of the country. There are also smaller ports, such as Ghent, Ostend and Bruges. Once your container has passed through customs, it will go by truck and/or train to your new home in Belgium.

Clearing customs in Belgium

The customs process sounds complicated, but it’s fairly straightforward, and your shipping company will help you through it. You are required to create a clear and specific inventory of everything you’re bringing into Belgium, declaring the value of each item. If the Belgian customs officials are dissatisfied with your inventory, they will physically inspect your container and charge you extra fees. See below for an idea of the items that are restricted or prohibited by Belgium customs. People coming from within the EU do not have to pay duties or taxes on their household goods, but the rules are different for non-EU arrivals. If you are coming from outside the EU then you can bring your personal belongings into Belgium, but you need to meet certain conditions. The goods must be a) used, b) at least six months old, and c) imported no more than one year after your arrival. For more information, check out the official Belgium customs website.
